ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Drachm (Silver, 28 mm, 2.48 g, 3 h), Arab-Sasanian type, citing governor Umayya ibn ʿAbd Allah (AH 73-78 / AD 693-698), BBA (mobile court mint), AH 77 = 696/7. Draped Sasanian-style bust to right, wearing elaborate mural crown; behind head, ‘GDE ʾp̄zwt'’ (‘[may his] glory increase’ in Pahlavi); before head, ‘ʾwmyyʾ / Y ʾp̄dwlʾʾn’ (‘Umayya ibn ʿAbd Allah’ in Pahlavi); countermark: tamgha on the top left; in outer margin, ‘bism Allāh’ (‘In the name of Allah’ in Arabic) and a Pahlavi word not yet satisfactorily explained. Rev. Fire altar with ribbons, flanked by two attendants; above altar, star and crescent; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, BBA (abbreviation for the name of the mint in Pahlavi). Album 29.
